Whoopi Goldberg Moves to Ortygia

After numerous visits to Syracuse, American actress Whoopi Goldberg, known for her roles in “Ghost” and “Sister Act,” has fallen in love with the area. She has officially decided to move to Ortygia, where she has been spotted several times in recent months. In June, she presented her book and took a photo with Mayor Francesco Italia, expressing her affection for the city, which she also shared with her friend Robert De Niro.

Goldberg is expected to join the cast of the Rai 3 soap opera “Un Posto al Sole.” Previously, she lived in Sardinia, where her villa in Stintino—a small fishing village away from the spotlight—was put up for sale for €12 million. This decision sparked controversy, especially since it came just days after Mayor Rita Vallebella announced she wished to grant Goldberg honorary citizenship in the Sardinian town.

The mayor expressed disappointment, stating, “It was an unexpected farewell; she snubbed us. She had made very positive comments about our area, saying she was happy here and had found a corner of paradise. Then, without telling us, she decided to leave. We’re sorry to see her go.” Later, the mayor sought to downplay the situation in conversations with Antenna Sicilia and Telecolor, saying, “We’re not offended; we’re happy to have hosted her. Sardinia is ready to welcome her back should she wish to return. We had a great affection for her, and she has shown great affection for us, which is why I offered her honorary citizenship. Whoopi, we were happy to have you, and we’ll be happy to welcome you back.”
