The municipality of Scicli in Italy has secured funding from the Pnrr Funds for a project aimed at improving the waste collection system in the area. As part of this project, 6 mini ecological islands will be built in Scicli, Cava D’Aliga, Jungi, Donnalucata, Playa Grande and Sampieri. Citizens who use these islands will receive a discount on their garbage tax payment. The islands will have sensors that will alert operators when they reach capacity and need to be emptied. The islands will be built with a dry stone fence and gabions, and will be accessed via an electronic gate that will be activated using a health card. Inside, there will be bins that function like plastic-eating machines. Citizens will be able to deliver plastic, paper, glass, and undifferentiated waste, but wet and bulky items cannot be accepted. In addition to the 6 islands, the project also includes the construction of 2 Municipal Collection Centres (CCRs) in the San Biagio and Zagarone districts. These centres will allow citizens to dispose of bulky objects, pruning clippings, waste, electronic devices, medicines, batteries, used oil, used clothes, and damp and aggregates resulting from small jobs. The new waste collection system aims to provide citizens with a more efficient, dynamic and user-oriented service, particularly in areas where improvements are needed. Citizens will be able to use the service without time or day constraints, identifying themselves with their Health Card and weighing the separated waste delivered. The municipal administration will continue to maintain home waste collection, even if integrated with the new system. Overall, this project aims to provide the citizens of Scicli with a technological and innovative solution that allows them to dispose of waste in a convenient and flexible manner according to their needs.
